Week 10: Thursday Behance Looking and BFA

3 Artisits and Their Demo Reels

1) Juan F. Leguizamon - I really enjoyed his page layout on Behance. His work is extremely graphic and bright and the layout fills the space with his work in columns. When you hover over one of his pieces, it gives a solid block with the title inside which helps focus through all the imagery. I liked his Demo Reel because it opened with a speed up video of him drawing the title card. The rest of his demo was a variety of different pieces ranging from vector to hand drawn and a lot of motion graphics. His style always comes across as quirky and clean though even with earlier sketches featured in his reel.

2) Nicolas Girard - I would say that Nicolas' site is more enjoyable than Juan's was because even though he has less work to display and it doesn't fill the site layout up, that it works with his aesthetic which is all about being fast, clean and concise. I like that when you hover over a piece in the grid that it literally becomes grayed out. By creating that negative space it really lets you focus on the items you're clicking and is more direct than Juan's was. His Demo Reel I feel is stronger than Juan's too mostly  because I think it flows faster but I still see his foundations of typography and design layout all through his motion graphics reel. He also shows that he is more interested in mono-toned palettes which is a complete contrast to Jaun's bright kid- friendly colors.

3) Factory Fifteen - This site is not a who but a they. They are a production studio that specializes in animation and architectural representation. I choose them because I felt their demo reel to obviously be very strong and their shots included all played off each other well with all of the cuts matching on action. It also shows off very distinct scifi and post-apolitical, world building themes. You get a real sense of what they make and what they specialize in. I liked on there site how if you hovered over a piece that it would start playing a teaser of the work but remained grayed out otherwise which is the exact opposite of the other two artists I listed above. I don't think they did the best job with the rest of the layout even though I think its intentional. Their name floats behind their work when you scroll over and the links to their contact info and awards can get cut off if your browser is small enough. It sounds like they didn't accommodate for multi-browser viewing which doesn't look good when all of their work is so nice.

This is an updated and my first realized version of Nerine. I decided to change her hair from light blonde to auburn for more visual contrast. I altered the colors of her clothing a little too.  I used some media brushes in Photoshop because I wanted her styling to feel a little more organic and handmade like the paintings she makes.

Week 10: BFA Critique and Self-Critique of 5 Minute Presentation

A. Sketch of Nerine

The Fish

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh-txF42X9s

For this week I had just finished my Animatic and decided to immediately take my character sketches and peg and rig them even though I haven't received feedback on my final Animatic. The video of Nerine isn't very long and the movements are subtle. I was trying to just convey mostly how the rigging of her hair would work with also for myself quickly making a puppet that I could understand the hierarchy of her body parts. This is in no way finished but I just wanted to quickly see what I'd further be developing with her.
As for The Fish, he isn't colored but I wanted to quickly try and see how he moves. I imagine him as very serpent-like and mostly moves with his jaw always thrust outwards. This also is a very rough video that in no way is finished but just a quick study sketch of how his body would function swimming.

Calendar Update

B. Self Critique of 5 Minute Presentation

Mostly what I gathered wasn't working from my presentation last Thursday, wasn't the visuals or how I structured them (nor what I said during them) but what I said. First of all I mentioned loving cartoons and consuming them as a child which was not the best since many other children did like wise and didn't choose to become an animator. It would have been better if I stated that there were these shows or animators that suck with me until later in my life and how they influenced me because then it highlights how I am different from most people when they become adults, that they leave things like cartoons in their past. Basically if I had stated that these carried over into my teenage years and adulthood and how I still consider them now, it would have been a more successful comparison. I didn't say enough sepcifics about which cartoons I watched either. I did state programs like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and animators like Tex Avery and Bob Clampett and obviously the major Disney pictures of the era but I didn't say much more. For instance I said that I enjoyed both golden era cartoons from Tex Avery but also the modern cartoons on Cartoon Network but didn't give very specific examples. Also I mentioned "Experimental Mixed Media" but didn't say something that would give a specific visual such as a commercial or show that would illustrate that.
When I started into what I came to MCA for I stated that it was originally for 3D Computer Animation and mention that a few times before making the comparison to how now I don't want to wholly focus on that. I should have just left this part out entirely because then it sounds like I'm not ready to let that idea go and move forward or that I'm not dedicated to what I'm working on now. If its in the past then I just need to leave it there and not tell the interviewer this information. I ended this comparison by saying that I decided to "fall back on 2D animation" which sounds negative and as if 2D animation isn't considered as much of a priority as 3D animation was which doesn't sound good trying to get a job at an animation firm. Some of the good things I said that made people listen or take notice of was "that I want to make character driven narratives" and " I like working in groups." When I said them, I said them with confidence which I need to have more of overall. Finally I finished up my presentation with what kind of job I am looking for or my dream job and used my Traveling Fellowship research as an example. We apparently shouldn't try to keep including our Traveling research from now on since that was just specifically related to this assignment but I think mine made more since because it was more incorporated and less tacked on. What I said at this point about what kind of content I want to make at a production company that is known for dealing with "child-like content in a bent and grotesque, adult manner" should have been stated earlier. I should have something along those lines and come to that conclusion when showing my demo reel and then weave it throughout my presentation so the interviewer has a clear idea of what I'm about. Then at the end I could relate it back to what I'm looking for in a job and what I'm interested in further pursuing.

Week 8: Tuesday - Calendar and Travel Fellowship

I have planned a meeting with Gadsby for Wednesday to get feedback on my resume and go over the next steps in applying for an internship. My revised Calendar:

Myrtle Powell Bowld European Traveling Fellowship:

I would utilize this traveling fellowship opportunity to do a miniature tour of some of England's animation studios, most of which are based in London. The studios that I have singled out range across the three major types of animation because I would like to sample some of England's views of each category. Also I am interested in all types of animation even though I'd like to specify in 2-D animation, so I am interested in viewing many different avenues since I think I display strengths in each field. I would start in London itself and tour the facilities of Spy Pictures, Blue-Zoo Productions, and Collingwood O'Hare. Spy Pictures is a production company that mostly deals in animated short films, commercials, and title sequences. I'm looking into them because they use animation in a variety of different besides just traditional or 3-D formats which allows for a greater body of work to view and become familiar with making. I picked Blue-Zoo Productions because they are a small 12 full time staffed with free lance animators that specialize in 3-D computer animation. They work mostly on television for children's programs including commercial ads and bumpers in-between shows. Collingwood O'Hare Entertainment focuses on 2-D animation and specifically children's cartoons and fairy-tales and many based on best selling children's books such as Dr. Seuss. I believe I would really enjoy touring and viewing what is offered at this studio because I believe much of my work deals with the view of innocence and has a whimsical playfulness. Finally I would travel a few hours West to Bristol, Southwest England to view Bolex Brothers and Aardman Studios. Bolex Brothers is a company that specializes in stop motion and experimental pixilation in their work. Their portfolio comes across as dark and surrealistic with an unsettling tone. The main body of their work is commercials but they have made two feature films. I find their seemingly dark tone interesting because they take the nature of stop motion and make it a feature of their portfolio which I have found to be successful in some of my work as well. Finally Aardman Studios is a stop-motion clay animation house mostly known for the Wallace and Gromit movies and Chicken Run. They have a large body of short films and obviously have famous feature length ones as well. They have also embraced using 3-D computer animation while still holding on to their well loved clay style. The most recent feature of their's is The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists due in 2012. Their level of work is always remarkable and definitely enough to make them stand out in the animation world with their work. They stand out to me and interest me because they are able to make such large budget films and yet still comfortably retain their identity and style. I find them fascinating in that respect because I am interested in seeing how animators are able to work in large companies and produce quality work while still maintaining and individual voice which I believe many of these companies demonstrate.

Week 7 Tuesday: Local Internships

My first pick for a local internship would be Running Pony Productions. While being an intern here it looks like you would get a lot of hands on experience in post-production work. The tasks included would be logo animation, preparing content for video edits, compressing video, and making DVDs. A few alumni from our school have gone here and also from word-of-mouth it sounds like a nice local place that doesn't have an impossible demand. They supposedly are looking for interns year round. This company would allow me to utilize Photoshop, After Effects, and video editing and DVD building skills. They do not have salary compensation.

The next pick for a local internship would be True Story Pictures. They are also looking for a post-production assistant year round. Supposedly they'd utilize the same skills as Running Pony but when looking closer I noticed that they want someone knowledgeable with Word and good verbal and communication skills. It sounds like you would be less finalizing and making like Running Pony and more of filing and note taking for the production crew. Also they have paid internships for those who know Final Cut Pro and regular internships where one would learn Final Cut Pro.

The last pick for a local internship would be working on a web site for St. Jude Children's Hospital. This is not a paid internship either and it's only offered in the Fall and Spring. This would be a one time experience as well because they aren't looking for any new recruits unlike the previous two which would consider it. This job focuses mostly on Graphic Design and Web page design. I have some experience with Web design but this one is the least of projects that I feel confident in. I am curious about looking into designing web pages and trying to utilize that skill.

I was looking into IMC Studio Inc. as a possibility but they are based in Russellville, AK which is over a 200 mi. commute. They are apparently looking for interns year round so this could be a consideration for in the summer and living in AK. They don't pay interns but they are interested in hiring for full-time. Most of the work would be fantasy Concept Art for characters, costumes and environments. It doesn't look as if you'd animate at the intern level but your work would be the foundation that other projects would be based off of.
